In the street of my maternal grandmother's house, in Belém, Pará, Brazil, the group Rainha da Juventude (Queen of Youth in a free-translation) rehearses every year for the performances of the feasts of St. John. I grew up watching the colors, dances and sounds that rock the June evenings of my so many other families involved with it. Since I left the north to live in the south of Brazil, some things have been sorely missed, and certainly the atmosphere of June nights is one of them. These are photos from June 2019, when I accompanied the Queen of Youth in some performances around the state of Pará.
Na rua da casa de minha avó materna, em Belém do Pará, a quadrilha junina Rainha da Juventude ensaia todos os anos para as apresentações das festas de São João. Cresci assistindo às cores, danças e sons que embalam as noites de junho da minha e tantas outras famílias envolvidas com a época. Desde que saí do norte do país para morar no sul, algumas coisas me fazem muita falta, e certamente a atmosfera das noites juninas é uma delas.
